Biography :

Educated at Market Bosworth Grammar School, John Freer was a member of Westleigh Rugby Club. He played four matches in the pack for the Leicester Tigers' first team in 1907-08. He served four years in The Leicestershire Royal Horse Artillery, reaching the rank of Sergeant on 4.6.1910. He took his discharge at the completion of his term of service in May 1914. He began the First World War as Private 2135 in The Leicestershire Yeomanry. He was commissioned into 10th Battalion The Leicestershire Regiment on 2.11.1914. Having received his second posting on 1.12.1914, he formed one of a party of four officers detailed to take out a detachment of the 1st Royal Inniskillings to The Dardanelles, sailing on 21.5.1915. On arriving in The Aegean, he was attached to the 2nd Battalion Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment). Aged 27 years, he died of wounds caused by gunshot wounds to the abdomen and buttock on 29.6.1915 at Mudros. He is buried in East Mudros Military Cemetery, Greece.
